The son of Eldred Milledge Bird and Edna Holloway, he was raised in South Carolina. He served during the Civil War. He attended and graduated from medical school. We are not sure which family member has his sheepskin diploma, but it was reported on some years ago. After the war, he served as a medical doctor, but the South was so impoverished that he was paid in produce, and once even with a blind horse. He had a small store underneath his 2nd floor medical practice.

His headstone was located and photographed by his great grand daughter, Amy Forsgren.
