BURLEY - Dee Rex Bingham, a 91-year-old resident of Burley, passed away on Monday, Sept. 3, 2012, at St. Luke's Magic Valley Regional Medical Center in Twin Falls.
He was born on Feb. 27, 1921, in the View District of Burley, Idaho, the son of Ezra and Mary Elizabeth (Wood) Bingham. He attended local schools and graduated from Burley High School. Dee Rex married the love of his life, Bessie Irene Tinsley, on Christmas day 1941. Their marriage was solemnized in the Logan Utah LDS Temple on Oct. 20, 1942. They farmed in the Unity area for the next two years.
His brother, Keith, was inducted into the United States Army in 1943. Dee felt that since he was the older brother, he should enlist and go with him. Together, they left on Jan. 27, 1944. Dee served as a surgical technician in the 79th hospital train. He was in charge of the surgery and all shots given on the train. Upon his release on April 10, 1946, he was honorably discharged as a sergeant. After arriving home, he and Bessie returned to the life of farming and owned and operated farms in the Pella area of Burley, and in Jerome.
Dee was active in the community and served in the Cassia County Farm Bureau, on the Unity Light and Power board, and helped to organize the Magic Valley Vegetable Growers Association where he served as secretary for four years and as its president from 1973 until 1978. He also was active in the 4-H organization.
He was a member of the LDS Church and served in the Boy Scouts, Young Men, Elders Quorum, high priest group, stake mission, stake high council, and with his wife, Bessie, served a mission call in November of 1982, to act as the rotating couple at the Church sites in Palmyra, New York of the New York Rochester Mission, and then in 1984, in the Australia Perth Mission.
He is survived by his children, Kendell (Connie) Bingham of Sigurd, Utah, Randy (Janet) Bingham of Burley, Loren (Adele) Bingham of Hazelton, Dee Ann (Dennis) James of Burley, Steven (Deborah) Bingham of Twin Falls, and Dean (Debbie) Bingham of Jerome; 30 grandchildren; and 82 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved Bessie (who passed away on May 16 of this year); six brothers; one sister; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at the Burley LDS Stake Center, 2050 Normal Ave., in Burley, with Bishop Mark Dowdle officiating. Burial will be in Gem Memorial Gardens in Burley with military rites provided by the Mini-Cassia Veterans Organization.
Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., in Burley, and from noon until 12:45 p.m. Friday at the church.
