MARK D. BINGAMAN
Mark D. Bingaman, Yeoman 1st Class, U.S.N.R., son of Elsie and Robert Bingaman, was born in Lucas county, Iowa, on Dec. 28, 1913, and was killed in action while serving aboard a U.S.N. airplane carrier in the Asiatic theatre in March, 1945, and buried at sea with full military honors, at the age of 31 years and 3 months.
He attended the rural schools of Lucas county and graduated from the Chariton high school with the class of 1933. In October of that year he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served four years on the U.S.S. Saratoga airplane carrier.
In 1937 he returned to Iowa and attended Iowa Success Business School in Ottumwa until he accepted a position with the government in 1939 in Washington, D.C. He served faithfully in that position until March, 1942, when he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve.
He was stationed in Arlington, Virginia Naval Annex until December 17, 1943, at which time he was assigned to the airplane carrier on which he served overseas until he met his death.
He was united in marriage to the former Marcella Norris in August, 1939, in Washington, D.C. To this union one son was born, Robert Lee, age one.
Besides his widow and son, of Arlington, Virginia, he leaves to mourn his passing his mother, Mrs. Elsie J. Bingaman, of Chariton, Iowa; and three brothers and seven sisters.
They are, his twin brother, Paul, of Fort Madison, Iowa; Mrs. Mildred Wright, Mrs. Marie Burgett, Mrs. Ethel VanZee, Mrs. Ina Garland, all of Chariton, Iowa; Mrs. Mae Sanders, of Lacrosse, Wisconsin; Mrs. Lois Channell and Lowell Bingaman, of Sacramento, California; Alfred Bingaman of Los Angeles, California; and Mrs. Dorothy Lovely of Arlington, Virginia.
He also leaves many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. His father preceded him in death in November, 1940.
Mark was a loving and devoted husband and father and ever thoughtful of his mother, family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Memorial services will be held at The Church of the Nazarene, of which he became a member in his early youth, when Mrs. Marcella Bingaman and son, Robert Lee, arrive in Chariton.
