Charles was a son of Jonathan and Hannah Binam.
Charles enlisted on 1 Feb 1865 as a replacement soldier for William Harvey. He served as a Private in Company H, 5th United States Colored Heavy Artillery. During his enlistement he was on Garrison duty at Vicksburg, MS until he mustered out 31 Jan 1866.
His military record spelled his name "BYNAM" and he is on the African American Civil War Memorial, Plaque A-12 as Charles Bynam.
