Death: Mar. 27, 2010

Imogene Baker, 78, of Paragould went to live with our Lord on Saturday. She is best remembered as one of those unique individuals who touched the life of everyone around her regardless of circumstances.

During her professional career, she was co-owner of Baker Produce Company, active in PTA, Girl Scouts, and 4-H. In 1970, she was elected Paragould's first female alderman. In this capacity, she helped lay the groundwork for the Kingshighway overpass which, for the first time in the city's history, enabled the east side of town unobstructed access to hospital facilities.

She worked with the David Puryear Center and American Red Cross before becoming a case manager for Northeast Arkansas Area on Aging. She was presently serving as site manager for the Paragould mini-rise.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnny and Vernia Bilyeu; four brothers, Charles, Bill, Harold and Marvin Bilyeu; her first husband, Lawrence Baker; second husband, Lyman Azbill; and granddaughter, Candace Scott.

Living family members include three daughters, Linda Edrington of Memphis, Tenn., Grace Scott and husband Jim Scott of Paragould, and Laura Ferguson of Jonesboro; and her beloved Boston terrier, Missy; eight grandchildren, Jenifer and Shawn Hodge of Rockwall, Texas, Andrea and Don Allen of Plano, Texas, Brook and Eric Reynolds of Jonesboro, Justin and Erica Edrington of Rogers, Lawrence Ryall of Denton, Texas, and Rebecca and Steven Ferguson of McAllen, Texas; 11 great-grandchildren, Mallory and Leah McBroom, Lauren Hodge, Nico Edrington, Jace Jackson, Madison and Brock Reynolds, Preston and Garrett Carpenter, Stuart and Grant Allen; and two sisters, Helen Miller and Mary Hilker of St. Louis, Mo. She also leaves behind many beloved friends.

Graveside services will be at Linwood Cemetery at 1:30 today with Terry Watson officiating. The funeral procession will leave Mitchell Funeral Home at 1:15 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital would be appreciated.
