Cardinal Louis Billot, of the Society of Jesus, was born in January 12, 1846, in Sierck-les-Bains, Lorraine, France.
He received his education at the Seminaries of Metz, Bordeaux and Blois, and was ordained to the Priesthood on May 22, 1869, in Blois aged 23. He joined the Society of Jesus on November 25, of that year in Angers and took his Final Vows within the Order on February 2, 1883, in Laval. Performing pastoral work in Paris and in Laval between 1875 and 1879, he served as faculty member of the Catholic University of Angers from 1879 until 1882, of the Jesuit Scholasticate of Ile de Jersey from 1882 till 1885, and of the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome, lecturing Dogmatic Theology, between 1885 and 1910. On June 19, 1909, he was named Consultor of the Holy Office.
Aged 65, Billot was created Cardinal Deacon in the Consistory of November 27, 1911, by Pope Pius X with the Deaconry of Santa Maria in Via Lata, November 30, 1911. Participating in the Conclaves of 1914 and 1922, he was one of the three Cardinal Presidents of the Pontifical Academy San Tommaso of Rome, together with Cardinals Benedetto Lorenzelli and Michele Lega. Member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission, due to his sympathy for the Movement Action Franšaise, condemned by Pope Pius XI, resigned the Cardinalate on September 13, 1927. His resignation accepted by the Pope through a letter dated September 21, 1927, and announced to the Cardinals in the Consistory of December 19, of that same year. He was the only Cardinal to resign his rank from the Sacred College of Cardinals in the Twentieth Century. Several sources state however, that Billot was stripped from his Cardinalitial dignity whilst in private audience with Pope Pius XI, and he later wrote the letter of resignation for formality.
Father Billot died on December 18, 1931, in his humble cell at the Jesuit Novitiate of Galloro, near Ariccia, Province of Rome, aged 85, and lies interred in the Jesuit Chapel, inside the Campo Verano Cemetery of Rome.
