Earle N. Billings, 87, retired Executive Vice President of the American Cotton Shippers Association, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, August 21, at 10:15 P.M. at Quince Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where he had been a patient since January.
Mr. Billings joined the ACSA, the national trade association of cotton merchants, in 1947 and led the group for over 40 years, retiring in 1990. During his tenure, joint trading rules with all major markets were developed or maintained. Mr. Billings' dedicated service to the cotton trade is still found through his tireless work with trade associations in Korea, Japan and Taiwan regarding uniform contracts and he was instrumental in the development of important amendments of trade rules and contract terms for a then-emerging market, China.
Norwood, as he was known to his family was born in Vaughan, MS, on February 9, 1924, and grew up in the McComb, MS area. He was one of 9 children. Nicknamed "Peanut" he was awarded all-state honors in basketball for the McComb Tigers and was a member of the All Big-8 Football Team. After high school, he enlisted in the U. S. Army and served in the Ryuku offensive seeing action on Okinawa.
Earle's many interests included genealogy, art and music appreciation, and keeping in contact with his network of friends. He was an avid golfer and tennis player. He and his wife were charter members of Christ United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Jarvis Billings, a son Kenneth G. Billings, his grandson, Colin G. Billings of San Francisco, his sister Peggy Billings of Trumansburg, NY, numerous nieces, nephews, and a beloved goddaughter, Sigrid Orr of Brooklyn, NY.
Services will be held at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb at 2PM Friday, August 26, 2011. Burial will be in Hollywood cemetery.
