Charles David Billings Sr., 91, of McComb, died Feb. 11, 2007, at Camellia Estates in McComb.
Visitation is 1 p.m. today at Jones Family Funeral Services in McComb until services there at 3 p.m., with the Rev. David Billings and Dr. David Millican officiating. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery.
Mr. Billings was born Nov. 26, 1915, in McComb to Clement Dave Billings and Eynes Dickerson Billings.
He served as an Army lieutenant in World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart as well as a Declaration of Honor from the City of Antwerp, Belgium. After the war, he returned to his position as secretary to the superintendent of the Louisiana division of the Illinois Central Railroad in McComb. Work soon took him first to Memphis, Tenn., and then to Helena, Ark., where he opened Billings Bookkeeping Service in 1958, which he operated until 1989 and which continues to bear the Billings name. Mr. Billings was the first of his family to receive a college education. He graduated from Southwest Mississippi Junior College and then from Draughon's Business College in Tupelo, where he met and married his wife, Joyce, on Feb. 6, 1939. Throughout his life, Mr. Billings was a devoted Ole Miss fan. In 1989, he and his wife retired to the family homestead in McComb.
Mr. Billings was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 68 years, Joyce Elizabeth Hamn Billings, who died just one week before him; a sister and brother-in-law, Fannye and Ewell Gill; and five brothers, Clifford Billings and his wife Gladys, Harry Billings, Aubrey Billings and his wife Ouida, James Billings and Robert "Bob" Billings.
Survivors include a daughter, Bonnye B. Huffman of McComb; a son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. David Billings and Margery Freeman of New York City; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patti B. Brabham and husband Mack of McComb, and Kay B. Gray and husband Jeff of Denham Springs, La.; a sister, Peggy Billings of Trumansburg, N.Y.; a brother and sister-in-law, Earle Norwood Billings and wife Dorothy of Memphis; and two sisters-in-law, Lois Billings of Jackson and Carol Billings of Columbus, Ga.; grandchildren, Lisa Anderson and husband Dennis, and Lori Reed and husband Tom, all of Roanoke, Va., Nathan Shroyer and friend Brittany Ogilby of New Orleans, Noah Shroyer and wife Sharyl Martini of Cincinnati, Stella Billings and friend Peter Button of San Francisco, Trey Brabham and friend Eilleen Sabillon of Austin, Texas, Erika L. Brabham of McComb and Jillian Gray of Denham Springs; five great-grandchildren, Brittany Leigh Anderson, Christa Marie Anderson, Ian Thomas Reed and Cole Harrison Reed, all of Roanoke, and Johnathan Kien Shroyer of Cincinnati; plus numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends.
