CRAMERTON - Cecil H. Bierley, 89, died July 2, 2009, at Carillon Assisted Living in Cramerton.
Cecil was born July 23, 1919, in Sylacauga, Alabama.
He was predeceased by his parents, Rosa Drucilla Brown and Henry Francis Bierley, as well as his eight siblings.
After serving in the South Pacific in WWII, Cecil graduated from Auburn University. He earned a Specialist Degree from Columbia University (NY) and completed further graduate work at the University of North Dakota. He was a professor at Columbia College in Columbia, SC from 1954-1984 where he served as chairman of the Business Department. Upon retirement Cecil performed extensive volunteer work at Richland Memorial Hospital and later at Lowman Nursing Home.
Cecil is survived by his wife of 66 years, Carolyn Coggin Bierley, of Gastonia, NC; daughters – Cecilia Colbert of Dunedin, FL and Gayla Foscue (Dallas) of Gastonia, NC; grandchildren – Scott Colbert (Karen) of San Antonio, TX, Shannon Malone (Scott) of Memphis, TN., and Earle Riedley of Belmont, NC; great granddaughters – Millie Grace Malone and MacKenna Colbert.
Cecil will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his love of people, especially children, and his wonderful sense of humor.
A memorial service will be held in Gastonia on August 8, 2009.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be sent to Gastonia Hospice, PO Box 3984, Gastonia, NC 28054 or to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Garden Place at Carillon Assisted Living and Gastonia Hospice for their compassionate, gentle care of "Mr. Cecil." .
