Christina Elizabeth Bickel, 91, of Round Lake Park, Ill., died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at Hillcrest Nursing Center in Round Lake Beach.
She was born Oct. 25, 1916, in Brownstown, Ind., to Christian and Irene Lawell Waldkoetter. On April 20, 1940, she married Edward J. Bickel in Chicago.
A resident of Round Lake Park since 1958, she also lived in Indiana for 23 years and in Chicago for 19 years. She grew up in Brownstown and Columbus, Ind. She lived on a farm, where she learned to garden and tend to the animals.
She rode in horse-drawn carriages and the Model T Ford, and attended a one-room schoolhouse.
After moving to Chicago, she worked in an office and also taught Hawaiian guitar. During the war, she worked for Revere Copper and Brass making bullets.
She loved flowers, birds, her pets and sewing. She did sewing for people for many years.
She had been a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Round Lake Park since 1958.
Survivors include three children, Carol Lee (Ken) Swanson of Lake Villa, Ill., Edward (Carla) Bickel of Harvard, Ill., and Steve (Mary) Bickel of Inglis, Fla.; six grandchildren, Zachary and Joshua Swanson of Lake Villa, Earl (Heidi) Bickel of Colorado, Sally Evanson of Milwaukee, Steve Bickel of Crystal River, Fla., and Christine Rosenbaum of Inverness, Fla.; three great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; a brother, Christian (Doris) Waldkoetter of Gary, Ind.; two sisters, Gladys (the late Gene) Harris of Columbus, Ind., and Bernice (the late William) Crouch of Columbus, Ind.; her best friend, Dixie Kluth of Smyrna, Tenn.; many nieces and nephews; and her companions, Kitty and Tails.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward J. Bickel, in 1974; a grandson, Arthur Bickel; a daughter-in-law, Loretta; sisters, Caroline (the late John) Armstrong, Selma (the late Cash) Carter, Verna Marcum, Beatrix Waldkoetter and Irene Waldkoetter; and brothers, Jerold, Joseph, and Nelson (the late Helen) Waldkoetter.
Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. today at Justen's Round Lake Funeral Home, 222 N. Rosedale Court, Round Lake, IL 60073.
Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 420 North Greenwood, Round Lake, IL 60073.
Interment will be at Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery in Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.
Memorials to St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church would be appreciated by the family.
