| Birth: | Jan. 31, 1895 Carsonville Sanilac County Michigan, USA | | Death: | Jan. 19, 1919, Germany | In December 1918, Pvt. David Bettis was with the American Expeditionary Forces in WWI. He was transferred to Mayen, Rine Land Germany. Stationed at evacuation hospital No. 8. He wrote a letter home Dec. 25, 1918 to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Bettis of Pt. Huron, Mich. In speaking of the country, he wrote: "This country is far ahead of France. This city is somewhat like an American city with a population of about 15,000. We have taken over four of the largest and nicest buildings in the city. The city hospital which is the best I have ever seen, and three large school buildings, so we have four hospitals in the city. .......the boys are all living with German families, and have real nice beds. The people treat us fine. They haven't any soap, and not much to eat. I guess they live on sauer kraut and beer."
David soon died on Jan. 19, 1919 (during the influenza epidemic) in Germany as part of the WWI Army of occupation.
