John Best Dies at the age of 73
John Homer Best, 73, prominent citizen of Monrovia, died at 11 o'clock last night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Webb Groff of Nortonville. In failing health for the past three years, the cause of his death was heart trouble.
John Homer Best was born at Monrovia May 10, 1871, the son of Aaron Best and Melinda Best, pioneers of Kansas. He had been a resident of Atchison county most of his life, attending school at Monrovia, Midland college in Atchison, and Baker university. On Dec. 21 1891, he was united in marriage to Clara Noffsinger and they set up housekeeping on his father's farm one mile south of Monrovia. His wife preceeded him in death June 16 1937. He was cashier of the bank at Arrington for a number of years and was postmaster and owner of the elevator and store at Monrovia.
FAITFUL CHURCH MEMBER
Mr. Best has been a member of the Methodist church at Monrovia for many years, a member of the Masonic lodge, and a charter member of the Eastern Star at Effingham. A man of wonderful character, he was a friend of everyone. For many years the church at Monrovia has held an annual homecoming and for the past 20 years he never missed attending one. He took a strong interest in politics.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs John Snyder of Monrovia, Mrs. Groff, and Mrs. Hazel Kaufman of Kansas City, one sister, Mrs. Emma Wood of Council grove, and four grandchildren, Orren and John Snyder, both in the army overseas, Helen Marie Snyder and Nancy Jane Groff.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Monrovia Methodist church with the Rev. C. V. Hall, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Monrovia cemetery.
