Robert Besanko was the son of John William Besanko, Sr. and Elizabeth (Bishop) Besanko, who were both born in England.

Robert is listed in the 1870 census of Chariton Township of Adair County, Missouri, at age 10 with his parents John 46, and Elizabeth 40, along with four siblings: John William, Jr. 16, Alex 14, Mary J. 12, and Sarah E. 7.

In 1880, Robert was 19 and working as a coal miner, according to the census of Nineveh Township of Adair County, Missouri. His father, John Besanko, Sr., has died and his mother Elizabeth 50 has remarried to Robert Dixon 50, also a coal miner. Also in the home are his sister Sarah 17, and brother Alex/Elick 22.

On November 26, 1882, Robert married Ella Osborn (1865-1957). It is unknown to this writer if they had any children. In the 1900 census, Robert and Ella have two nieces living with them, Rosa 14, and Gracie 12.

In 1910, Robert and Ella have different children living with them, listed as a niece and nephew, Rena Osborn 8, and Jesse Osborn 16. In 1920 these same children are still in the home with Jessie listed as 24 and Rena as 18.

Robert died in 1943 and Ella in 1957. Both are buried at Bear Creek Cemetery, as well as Robert's brother, John William Besanko, Jr.
