ANAMOSA, Iowa - Darlene G. Bertling, 81, of Anamosa, died after an extended illness, Monday afternoon, April 21, 1997, at the Anamosa Community Hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Anamosa, with the Rev. Michael Tauke officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Worthington. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa, where there will be a parish vigil service at 3 p.m.

She was born Aug. 17, 1915, in Chelsea, daughter of Jerad and Saidee (Cross) Beadle. She attended school in Chelsea and graduated with the class of 1932.

Mrs. Bertling worked at the post office for 10 cents per hour prior to her marriage.

She married Wulfram Joseph Bertling on May 3, 1941, in Worthington. They lived in Worthington for several years, then moved to Anamosa where Darlene worked at the Ben Franklin store for 25 years, retiring in 1978.

After the death of her husband in October 1978, she was an avid volunteer at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City, having volunteered 5,079 hours. She also was a volunteer at St. Patrick's School, its lunchroom and drove people to their health care appointments.

She enjoyed crocheting and quilt-making. She made a quilt for each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are a son, Norbert (Virginia), of Coralville; three daughters, Barbara Bertling Holly, of Anamosa, Alice Bertling (Wayne) Oltman, of Anamosa, and Marilyn Bertling (Eldon) Hanson, of West Branch; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Yeolande Brogden, of Oregon City, Ore.; and four sisters-in-law, Rose Mary and Betty Beadle, Angela Callahan and Wilma Miller.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wulfram "Bill" in 1978; a son, Alan Bertling in 1952; a granddaughter; and four brothers.

Memorials may be given in Darlene's name to the Anamosa Ambulance, Hospice of Mercy and the American Cancer Society.
