He retired after 33 years as a building inspector for Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority. Born in Knotts Island, N.C., he was a member of Chesapeake Seventh-Day Adventists, Norview Masonic Lodge (NU)113 and the Naval Fleet Reserve. He retired after 30 years of service with the Navy and had served with the Seabees 23rd Battalion.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie Berry; four daughters, Naomi Ellis of Beverly, Mass., Violet Wester of Norfolk, June Humphrey of Maysville, N.C., Dolores Rosenbaum of Norfolk; mother, Alpha Hough of Norfolk; a brother, John R. Berry of Norfolk; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel. Masonic rites will be accorded at the funeral home at 7 p.m. today by Norview Masonic Lodge (NU)113 and a visitation will follow until 8 p.m. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Eastern Virginia Medical School Diabetes Research Center.
