Edna Mae Berry was born July 27, 1916 in St. Augustine, Florida to Roy Jaudon Berry and Alma Mae Kent. She was the youngest of 6 children, all of whom were born in St. Augustine, Florida with the exception of the 4th child (born in Deland, Volusia County, Fl. where Alma's parents, Granville Moody Kent who served in the Civil War enlisted as Pvt, in Kolb's Battery, CSA, Arty in GA and Louisa Jane Marshall, were living). Her grandparents were George Washington Berry, born 30 Nov 1837 in Springfield, Effingham County, Georgia who served in the Civil War(COMPANY I - EMPIRE STATE GUARDS, 47th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Effingham County, Georgia) and Anza (Minnie)E. Jaudon born 05 Mar 1841 in Robertville, Black Swamp, Beaufort District, South Carolina, daughter of Elias William Jaudon and Susan Porter. The Berrys go back to the Revolutionary War in Georgia, Effingham Co., GA and the Jaudons were French Huguenots who settled in Charleston, SC and moved to Robertville (named after the Roberts who intermarried with the Jaudons)and were also active in the Revolutionary War in Beaufort District, SC. Robertville and Berryville are across the Savannah River from each other and were connected by a ferry.
Edna moved to Miami, FL with her family in the late 1900's and settled in Coconut Grove. She went to school at Coconut Grove Elementary School and Miami High School. She played the French Horn in the Miami Junior Symphony with her sister, Miriam, who played the clarinet. She worked on Miami Beach after high school and met her future husband, David Henry MacGillis, at a party her best friend, Janet, asked her to attend. She married David on September 4, 1936 in Miami, Florida. They later moved to Orlando, Sanford, Key Largo and Tallahassee, FL. They had two children, Verna and David. Her interests were her family and friends to whom she was devoted. She worked in the Booster Clubs of her children's schools to help raise money, loved boating and fishing, and playing the organ. She also was an avid and talented knitter, completing complex and beautiful sweaters and afgans which the children, and grandchildren still cherish and preserve for future generations.
She died in Tallahassee, FL on June 19, 1992 and will always be remembered and cherished as a loving, giving and endearing mother, grandmother and friend.
