Star-Ledger, The (Newark, NJ)Pg 19-Sunday, November 25, 2012. Cornelius N. "Nick' Berrigan Belleville police lieutenant, electrician, Navy veteran, 81, of Manahawkin, N.J., died on Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, at home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. at St. Mary R.C. Church, West Bay Avenue, Barnegat, N.J. Interment will follow at the Brig. Gen. W.C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown, N.J.
Born in Ogdensburg, N.J., Mr. Berrigan lived in Belleville, N.J., for many years before moving to Manahawkin in 1996.
He retired from the Township of Belleville, where he was a member of the fire department and later the police department; he retired from the latter as a lieutenant after 29 years. Mr. Berrigan was a 1980 graduate of the FBI National Academy.
Nick was also a licensed electrician, and owned Co-Be Electric in Belleville and Manahawkin for many years.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of St. Mary RC Church, Barnegat, N.J., as well as the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion.
Mr. Berrigan is survived by his wife, Doris; a daughter, Donna LaVitola and her husband, John, of Lake Forest, Ill.; two sons, Brian Berrigan and his wife, Dina, of Phillipsburg, N.J. and Gary Berrigan of New York City, and nine grandchildren, Lindsay, Dean and Christian Berrigan, and Michael, Matthew, Jay, Dominick, Adam and Max LaVitola.
