Joseph R. Berrigan died peacefully at his home on September 28, 2014. Born on July 20, 1933 in New Orleans, he was the son of Joseph R. & Ruth N. Berrigan. Joe graduated from Jesuit High School in New Orleans in 1951 & went on to earn a BA in Classics at Loyola University in New Orleans, completing that program in three years. He continued his study of Classics at St. Louis University where he received his MA in 1955. After serving for two years in the Army, mostly in Japan, Joe returned to New Orleans & entered the graduate program in history at Tulane University, earning his Ph.D. & specializing in the Italian Renaissance.
Joe joined the History Department at the University of Georgia in 1966 & taught there until his retirement in 1997. He loved teaching & offered a wide range of courses to graduates & undergraduates. He repeatedly won awards for outstanding teaching in the Honor’s Program & won every teaching award offered by the History Department, including the Joseph H. Parks Award. He won the University’s highest teaching honor, the Josiah Meigs Award, & was one of a small group of faculty to win that award twice.
Throughout his nearly half century in Athens, he remained active in the Catholic Center. For over forty years he served as reader in the Recording for the Blind program. After his retirement, he delivered Meals on Wheels. He had a loyal circle of friends who particularly enjoyed his wry wit & mischievous sense of humor.
Joe is survived by his wife of fifty-four years Ann Bee Berrigan & by his children Michael Berrigan & his wife Beth of Fairfax, Virginia; Joseph Berrigan & his wife Marie of Savannah; Kathleen Berrigan of Savannah; John Berrigan of Colbert; Timothy Berrigan & his wife Catherine of Roswell; by his brothers James & Patrick Berrigan of New Orleans; & eleven grandchildren.
A funeral service will take place at the UGA Catholic Center at 11:00 on Wednesday morning, October 1, 2014. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends give to the charity of their choice.
