Entered into eternal rest on the morning of August 14, 2010, Fred L. Bernstein, widower of Anita Kahn Bernstein. Residence, Charleston, SC.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his graveside funeral services in Beth Elohim Cemetery, Huguenin Avenue, Monday, August 16, 2010 at ten o'clock.

Mr. Bernstein was born May 7, 1924 in Charleston, SC, the son of Manning Aaron Bernstein and Mildred Lowinger Bernstein.

He attended Clemson University and had a career in advertising and marketing, where he was manager of several radio and TV stations, then owning his own advertising agency.

Fred was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the 102nd Infantry Division in France and Germany. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart, Bronze Star and received a field commission from Sergeant to 2nd Lieutenant.

Mr. Bernstein was a life member of Mariner Lodge #2, A.F.M., a member of the Scottish Rite Temple, Omar Shrine Temple and the KKBE Temple. He was past president of the Kiawah-Seabrook Exchange Club and instrumental in starting this organization. Fred was also past president of the Seabrook Island Property Owner's Association. He was on the board of the Lowcountry Food Bank and co-founder and publisher of "The Seabrooker" newspaper. He was active in the Jr. Chamber of Commerce and the Charleston Chamber of Commerce. Fred's love for food was shown in his restaurant ventures. . .The Harbour House, Deli Den, Bernstein's Bagel Factory and Deli, as well as his lifelong partnership with his wife and children in catering for the Jewish community.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 48 years, Anita Kahn Bernstein and his brother, Maurice H. "Tiny" Bernstein.

He is survived by a son, Hal D. Bernstein (Debby) of Athens, GA; three daughters, Lynn Bernstein, Teri B. Lash (Ira) and Sandy B. DeAntonio (Steve), all of Charleston; a brother, Charles S. Bernstein (Frieda) of Mt. Pleasant; eight grandchildren, Scott Bernstein (Kim), David Bernstein (Trishia), James Bernstein (Liz), Jordon Lash (Haley), Daniel Lash, Matthew DeAntonio, Morgan DeAntonio and Alexa DeAntonio; five great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to KKBE Mildred Bernstein Kitchen Fund, 90 Hasell Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
