Raymond Berns -- Herscher Visitation for Raymond "Red" C. Berns, 77, of Herscher, will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, with 7 p.m. Masonic rites, at the Clancy-Gernon-Hertz Funeral Home, west Kankakee. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Goodrich, where he was a member. The Revs. Ronald Hart and Richard Jacklin will officiate. Burial will be in Sts. Mary and Joseph Cemetery, Chebanse. Memorials may be made to Merkle-Knipprath Catholic Home or to Shriners Children's Hospital. He died Tuesday (March 4, 2008) at Merkle-Knipprath Catholic Home. Mr. Berns retired from Conrail Railroad after 36 years of service. He was a lifelong farmer in the Chebanse and Herscher area. He was born Aug. 9, 1930, in Chebanse, the son of Francis and Christina Anderson Berns. His wife, the former Patricia Sullivan, whom he married Feb. 23, 1952, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Kankakee, died June 5, 2005. He was a member of the Chebanse Masonic Lodge and enjoyed model railroading. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Rhonda Berns, Andy and Tammy Berns, all of Herscher; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and James Walck of Galesburg, Madelyn and Tom McGann of Shorewood, Deborah and Kevin Weller of Cullom; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Deceased are one daughter, Christina Berns; one grandson, Michael Weller; two brothers, Shirley and Leonard Berns; and two sisters, Viola Benoit and Luella Merten.
