Virginia Carey Bernard, 92, of Wilmington, Ohio (formerly of New Vienna, Ohio) died 12:13 PM, Thursday, May 12, 2011 at Wilmington Nursing & Rehabilitation Residence. She had also lived at Friendly Center for several years, surrounded by good friends and caring workers. Mrs. Bernard was born August 15, 1918, daughter of the late John and Louise Bevan Carey. After the death of both parents that same year, she went to live at the New Oglesbee Road home of her grandparents, Enoch and Jane Carey. She and her brother, Rendel Carey, were raised by loving grandparents and by the whole of the Gurneyville community. She was a birthright Quaker, a member of Chester Friends Church.

On August 15, 1940, she married Arthur W. Bernard in a home ceremony read by her grandmother, Jane M. Carey, long-time pastor of Chester Friends Meeting. The newlyweds made their home on the family farm on Tilton Rd near New Vienna. Her father-in-law, James K. Bernard, lived with them for the remainder of his life. Virginia was a dedicated homemaker, wife, daughter-in-law, and mother of five children. She and Art celebrated a 65th wedding anniversary before Art preceded her in death in 2006.

Virginia loved genealogy and compiled many volumes of family history and stories. People in the community often came to her for advice about genealogy research. She exemplified the Quaker model of acceptance and unconditional love for her fellow man. She always looked for, and found, the good qualities in all people. Her gentle nature will be missed by her friends, children, grandchildren and a large extended family.

She was a graduate of Wilmington High School and also Wilmington College where she was affiliated with Alpha Phi Kappa sorority. She taught one year in the first three grades of Cuba School. She was a member of Fairview Friends Meeting where she taught the children's Sunday school class for many years and was active in the women's groups and mission work. She and Art were active in the Clinton County Farm Bureau Association. She belonged to the New Vienna Mothers Club and New Vienna Senior Citizens. She was active for many years in the Daughters of the American Colonists, Robert Bolling chapter, and the Wayne Township WCTU.

Mrs. Bernard is survived by three sons, John (Karen) Bernard of Washington Court House, Ohio, Charles W. "Bill" Bernard of Wilmington, Ohio, and Paul C. Bernard of New Vienna, Ohio; a daughter, Marilyn (William) Hewitt of Kettering, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Bernard of Wilmington, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Mike (Deidre) Bernard, Wesley (Julie Ann) Bernard, Bradley (Laura) Bernard, Rebecca Bernard, Bill (Jenny) Hewitt, Cindy (Mike) King, and Anita (John) Caplinger; and eleven great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, a son, Roger Dean Bernard who died in 1996, a brother, Rendel Carey, and an infant sister, Rowena, are preceded in death.
