Antonia Louise Bernal, 59, of Springer, passed away Friday, July 25, 2008, in Las Vegas, N.M. She was born July 3, 1949, in Talpa, the daughter of Santiago and Carmen Duran Aguilar. She enjoyed motorcycles and could be found at various motorcycle rallies nationwide with her love and soulmate, Steve Duran of Watrous. In between trips to rallies, she occupied her time sewing folklorico dresses, costumes and blankets for grandchildren and daughters. Louise liked to camp and often did so throughout the summer months. Even with her hectic schedule, she still found time to assist friends and family members with birthday parties, weddings and the occasional funeral. Louise dedicated 28 years to the New Mexico Children's Youth and Family Services. Her final ten months of government service was spent with the New Mexico Department of Corrections. She retired from public service on October 31, 2007.
Those who knew Louise will remember her for the boundless energy she possessed, her ability to brighten a room as she enters with her outgoing, genuine and down-to-earth personality. As her niece Cohnie Perez of Springer said, "Aunt Louise was an amazing woman."
Louise is preceded in death by family members Gilbert Aguilar, Leroy Aguilar, Jimmy Aguilar, Rudy Aguilar, Albert Aguilar Teofilo (Onofre) Aguilar, Ramona Chavez, Aurelia Martinez, Stella Sanchez, Lorenzo Gallegos and Jose Gallegos.
She is survived by the love of her life and soulmate Steven Duran, her two daughters Debra and her husband Samuel Tran of Alamogordo, Emily Bernal and fiancÚ Elmer Chavez of Raton, Nikolas Tran. Misa Tran, Keanu Tran and Hailey Chaves and Elijah Chavez and one stepson Phillip Duran and fiancÚ Monica Trujillo, three brothers Herman Gallegos of Grand Junction, Colo., Emilio Alfonso Gallegos and wife Berlinda and Roger Aguilar and wife Nettie, all of Odessa. Texas, three sisters Alice Archuleta of Raton, Julia Whitehouse of Odessa, and Lorraine Perez of Springer, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary was Thursday at 7 p.m. at the St. Joseph's Church in Springer. Mass of the Resurrection will be held Friday, August 1, 2008, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Springer with Father Antonio Mondragon as the celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow in the Springer Cemetery.
