Edward Frederick Berger was born on April 11, 1874 in Sachsen (Saxony). He was the eldest surviving son of August Friedrich Berger and Marie V. Steiner who had at least thirteen children of which at least six died before reaching adulthood. His family immigrated to America in 1883 and made their way to Antigo, langlade County, Wisconsin. Edward became a barber,a trade that became his lifelong employment. On July 18, 1899 he married Margaretha Schultz in Trinity Lutheran Church, Ellington, Wisconsin. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Milwaukee where Edward resided until his death in 1957.
