Thomas Edgar "Tommy" Bergdoll Sr., 93, longtime Memphian passed away peacefully March 5th at his son's home in Memphis. Tommy was born in Detroit, Michigan on June 2, 1918. He spent most of his childhood living in foster homes and orphanages. He came to Memphis as a teenager and lived at St. Peters Orphanage, where his aunt, Sister Elise Bergdoll S.C.N., was stationed. Tommy graduated from Christian Brothers High School where he was an outstanding athlete. He was on the All-Memphis teams in baseball and football. He also played basketball, wrestled and boxed. He played minor league baseball in the New York Giants organization from 1939 to 1943. He then served in the US Army as a paratrooper until 1946. Tommy umpired high school and college baseball and softball in Memphis for many years. He retired from Layne and Bowler where he worked for 30 years. He is a member of the Memphis Park Commission Hall of Fame and the C.B.H.S. Hall of Fame. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years Frances Walsh Bergdoll, and son Frank Edward Bergdoll. He is survived by two sons, Tom Bergdoll Jr (Denise) of Boise, Idaho and Joe Bergdoll Sr (Lynette) of Memphis and two grandsons, Joseph Bergdoll Jr and Brett Bergdoll. A memorial mass will be celebrated for Tommy on Saturday, March 17, at 10 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 4852 Park Avenue, Memphis TN 38117. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be sent to Christian Brothers High School or St Peters Home for Children. (Published in The Commercial Appeal on March 14, 2012)
