Althalee Berg was born in Missouri Valley, Iowa to Oscar and Bess O'Dell. She was raised in Susanville, CA.

Althalee graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1941 and began a teaching career that spanned 4 decades. She married Howard Berg in 1947 and moved to Washington, DC where he was stationed in the US Navy. In the early 1950's they moved to Yokosuka, Japan where they lived until Howard retired in 1956 and then they moved to Chico.

Athalee taught elementary school for the Chico Unified School District from 1956 - 1982.

She loved rose gardening; mentoring her grandchildren and many decades of young children in the Chico Unified School District.

She is survived by her son Kenneth Berg (Peg Shalen) of San Geronimo; daughter Karol McCurley (Steve) of Fair Oaks and grandchildren Eli and Sophie Shalenberg; Meghan and Joe McCurley.

She belonged to the UC Berkeley Alumni; American Association of University Women and Delta Kappa Gamma.

Services will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Chico, Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 2:00 p.m.
