Etta Mae "Mazie" Berend, 69, lifelong resident of Archer County, passed away at her home on Friday, May 27, 2016, after a brief illness.

A vigil service and rosary will be held at 6:00pm, Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Windthorst. Mass will be celebrated at 10:00am Wednesday, June 1, 2016, with Rev. Michael Moloney, O.F.S. Parochial Administrator of St. Mary's and St. Boniface Catholic Church, and Deacon Don Brown officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery under the direction of Aulds Funeral Home of Archer City. A lunch reception will follow in the St. Mary's Parish Hall.

Etta Mae Johnston was born on December 14, 1946 in Lincoln, Arkansas to the late Clarence and Lorena Johnston. She and her family relocated to Archer County when she was a child. She graduated from Archer City High School in 1965 and was always a proud Wildcat, even when it was discouraged by her own children.

Adam Berend and Mazie Johnston were married on July 24, 1965 at St Mary's Catholic Church in Windthorst and remained in Archer County for the rest of their lives.

Mazie was a licensed beautician and operated a beauty shop for several years. She was also very involved as a supportive mom, grandmother and community volunteer. Some of her activities were: St Mary's Church musician, Aggie Moms Club, Hospice of Wichita Falls and many others. Recently, she enjoyed traveling with friends and family members.

Survivors include her children, Jason of Dallas, Gary and wife, Diana, of Cleburne, Curtis, Brandon and wife, Michele, and Chelsey of Windthorst; one brother, J.B. "Nubbin" Johnston and wife, Angela of Windthorst; grandchildren, John Adam, Kirsti, Tanner, Darian, Mitchell, Braden, Trent, Lane, Ava, Zoie, Preston, Jake, Alli and Cambreigh; one great-grandchild, Adam; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mazie was preceded in death by her husband, Adam Berend on March 12, 2012; one brother, Gary C. Johnston on April 16, 1970; one sister, Loretta Patterson on February 18, 2014; and one Godson and nephew, Gary S. Johnston on January 23, 2007.

Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons: John Adam, Tanner, Mitchell, Braden, Trent and Lane.
