Alvin Patrick Berchem, age 83, of New Holstein, passed away on Friday, October 22, 2010 at the Willowdale Nursing & Rehab Center.
He was born March 17, 1927 to Norbert & Magdalena (Kautzer) Berchem.
He graduated from the New Holstein High School in 1945 and had enlisted in the United States Navy where he served during WWII.
He married Carol Schwoerer on August 30, 1952 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church and worked many years at Arps Corp, later retiring in 1993 from Stoelting, Inc.
Earlier in his life, Alvin was a tremendous athlete who excelled in basketball and baseball. As his life moved on, his sport of choice became bowling and playing cards; these were hobbies that were enjoyed with many friends and created many lasting memories. Alvin was an avid Green Bay Packer fan who proudly held season tickets for many years, and had been attending games since they were still playing at the old City Stadium. He volunteered with the New Holstein Fire Department and was honored to have served next to so many fine individuals who also served there. Alvin was a hard and meticulous worker making sure that all of his responsibilities were followed through to the end. He instilled in his children that same work ethic and made sure that they had a sense of personal responsibility so that they, too, could continue to live out his example to them in their lives. Most importantly, Alvin was a wonderfully faithful and caring husband, having treasured his marriage to the love of his life, Carol, for over 58 years.
Survivors include his wife, Carol; his children, Cynthia (Russ) Hall & their son, Neil, of Plymouth, Kristine (Mark) Clay & their sons, James (Katy) & Stephen of Oklahoma; Jeffrey (Donna) & their daughters, Tara & Hayley of New Holstein, Jon (Lynn) & their children, Jacob & Kelsey of New Holstein, Joel (Debby) and their children, Kaitlyn & Kyle of Manitowoc, Melissa (Tim) Voelker & their children, Cole, Carter, Connor & Cade of Kiel; a son-in-law, Jeffrey Zachow of Neenah; in-laws, Mary (Bill) Corr of Illinois, Jerry (Darlene) Schwoerer of California, Dan (Lani) Schwoerer of Oregon, and Harvey (Ann) Schwoerer of New Holstein. His is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his daughter: Kim Zachow; his parents; grandsons, Russell Clay & Ross Berchem; brother & sister-in-law, Robert (Lee) Berchem; and his in-laws, Henry & Barbara Schwoerer, and Clarence Schwoerer.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church (1724 Madison St.) in New Holstein with the Rev. Harry Berryman officiating. Burial will take place in the Parish Cemetery. I am home in heaven, dear ones; Oh so happy and so bright. There is perfect Joy and Beauty, in this everlasting light. All the pain and grief is over, every restless tossing passed; I am now at peace forever, safely home in heaven at last. Then you must not grieve so sorely, for I love you dearly still; try to look beyond earth's shadows, pray to trust our Father's Will.
