ALBERT THOMAS "TOM" BENTON, the fourth of five children of Arvilla Mary Summers and Albert Adelbert Benton, was born in Indian Creek Township near Malvern, Iowa, December 15, 1915. Following his father's early death, the family moved to Malvern. While growing up there, the Benton boys gained a certain notoriety for pranks and fun. After graduating from Malvern High School, he earned a degree in business from the University of Nebraska and was commissioned officer's rank of 2nd Lt. in the Army Reserves.
Following graduation, he worked in the Mills County Auditor's Office in the Glenwood Court House, later transferring to the Treasurer's Office. Glenwood is where Tom met and courted Dorothy LouEllen "Micki" McKnight, wedding her on September 12, 1940 at the First Baptist Church
Tom was called to active duty in September 1941, reporting to infantry school at Fort Benning, GA, then assigned to various bases including Camp Swift Texas near Austin, where Michael Thomas, their first child, was born. Transferring to San Louis Obispo, CA, the 97th Division departed from there to the European Theater. As a Captain, Tom led his company into combat, liberating several cities. After the end of hostilities, he served a year with the U.S. Military government in Germany. At this time, he developed a life long interest in sailing, using a schooner on the North Sea. He honed his horsemanship here, training with Russian officers in European equestrian style jumping and winning several competitions.
Following his discharge from the military, he and Micki returned to Glenwood where their daughter Suzanne L. was born.
In 1951, Tom returned to active duty entering the Air Force as a Major at Offutt Air Force Base near Omaha, NE. This was followed by assignments to Ellsworth, SD, where he expanded his interest in horses developing the Base stables into a large and active organization enjoyed by base personnel and their families, especially his family; next at Yokota, Japan, he made many friends and developed a taste for Japanese cooking; he was next transferred to the Pentagon in Virginia; his final assignment was to Wheeler Air Base on the island of Oahu, Hawaii.
He retired from the military in 1966 and became a Civil Service employee assigned to Defense Communications in Arlington, VA. Tom and Micki lived in Reston, VA. After Tom retired from Civil Service, they moved to Virginia Beach, VA. They completed the full circle with their move to Glenwood in November 2002.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, sister Frances Brinkhous, and brothers Max, Jim, and Hurb.
Tom and Micki were married for nearly 63 years. He is survived by his wife, Micki, his sister-in-law Betty Benton, his daughter Suzy and her husband Larry Davis, and his son Michael and his wife Deborah. There are four grandchildren, Valery, Sebastian, Michelle, and Sean; four great grandchildren; eight nieces and nephews, other relatives and many good friends.
