C. Reed "Nookie" Benton, 88, Claysburg, passed away Saturday at home.
He was born in Queen, son of the late William and Ivy (Wright) Benton. He married Betty Jane Benton, who passed away Nov. 5, 1974, and then married Martha Jane "Marty" Burket, who passed away April 14, 2009.
Surviving are a son, Donald Benton of East Freedom; two stepsons: Dennis Burket and Bessie Dively and John Burket and wife, Debra, all of Claysburg; a stepdaughter, Sandra Yagiela and husband, Bill, of Farmington Hills, Mich.; a stepdaughter-in-law, Connie Burket of Mechanicsburg; nine grandchildren; a great-grandson; three sisters: Rita Lingenfelter and husband, Harold Jr., of East Freedom, Patty Lou Killian and husband, Charles, of Mead, Wash., and Nancy Kufert and daughter, Valerie, of Port Orange, Fla.; an uncle, Ted Benton of Brookes Mills; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Fern, who was killed in action at Iwo Jima during WWII; a stepson, William Burket; a stepdaughter, Kathy Fisher; and a grandson, Christopher Burket.
Reed was a 1946 graduate of Greenfield-Kimmel High School. He served in the 6th Marine Corps Division, Pacific Island Campaign, during WWII from 1943-46. He retired as a maintenance foreman from General Refractories, Claysburg, in 1986.
Reed was a member of Puzzletown Road Bible Church, Newry. He was also a member of the Marine Corps League of Bedford County and a lifetime member of the Claysburg American Legion. He enjoyed volunteering with his church, motor racing of all forms and spending time with his grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at Leslie-Miller Funeral Home, Claysburg, and 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012, at Puzzletown Road Bible Church, Newry, Pastors Lynn Johnston and Jon Gross officiating. Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to NHS Autism School, 1012 Eighth Ave., Altoona, PA 16602, or Claysburg Area Public Library.
