Georgia Faye (Bentley) Becker passed away March 2, 2012 in Duncanville, TX. She was a loving wife, mother, aunt and grandmother and loved entertaining friends and family. She moved from Maryland with her husband, Walter, in July, 2000, to be near their daughter and family due to the poor health of her husband, Walter. He preceded her in death on December 28, 2001. They were married fifty-four and one half years and lived and raised their family in Washington, D.C. and Maryland.
Mrs. Becker was born and raised in Oklahoma and after high school graduation, attended Draughon's Business College in Oklahoma City, was ready to graduate in 1942 and start interviewing for employment when we experienced Pearl Harbor. Recruiters from the Civil Service Commission came to the college to administer the test to anyone interested in going to Washington, D.C. to work for the Department of the Army at the Pentagon (now Dept. Of Defense) for a six month assignment. Mrs. Becker passed the exam, along with several of her friends, and reported to work in February, 1942. After a visit back home at Thanksgiving she discussed the issue with her family and all agreed to extend for a full year. After one year in the Pentagon, she did not feel the position was challenging and was not utilizing her skills. Reading "The Washington Post" every day and reviewing positions that were available, she applied for a position and was accepted with The British Embassy. After 3 years the Embassy was moving the staff back to their New York Headquarters. However, in the meantime she had met her husband, who was from Atlantic City, New Jersey, and was employed by the Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. They were married in June, 1943. Again Mrs. Becker referred to the Washington Post want ads and found the ad for Executive Secretary to the Vice President, Safeway Stores, Inc. Which was located near the White House and required less travel time, plus it was only a 5-day work week and the Government Agencies worked a 6-day week. It was during the time of food rationing on various items which was overseen by various Government Agencies; gathered the information on a daily basis, transmitted to Safeway Corporate Headquarters, Oakland, CA. Mrs. Becker remained in this position while her husband served in the Army in Germany for the next 3 years.
After her husband returned and their son and daughter were born, she remained at home for ten years. During this time the family was very active members of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Kensington, MD. Mrs. Becker taught Sunday school class for the four and five year old group, worked in the Nursery and served as Secretary to the Administrative Board. She also served as Secretary to the PTA where their son attended school and served as Den Mother to her son's Boy Scout Troop.
Mrs. Becker returned to work for the Cancer Chemotherapy National Service Center, Endocrinology Division, National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, working only 6 hours each day which allowed her to get her children off to school and be home when they arrived. After five years, she accepted the position of Executive Secretary to the Associate Director for Collaborative Research, Office of the Director, NIH. Responsibilities included scheduling the Division Directors, Executive Officers and Budget Officers of the various Institutes and Divisions to appear before the Appropriations Committee on Capitol Hill; attending the hearings along with her Director and if, during the questions being asked of the Directors, an answer was not forthcoming, she was required to make a note of it in its entirety and upon returning to the office, follow up and get the information to the appropriate Senator or Representative.
After five years, she was offered the position of Administrative Officer for the Division of Contracts and Grants, Office of the Director. With the assistance of one secretary and a young stay-in-school student, responsibilities included recruiting, interviewing and hiring Contract Clerks; recruiting for CPA's and other financial staff, processing travel vouchers Applications for Employment, working closely with Human Relations regarding promotions, etc., attended Administrative Officers meetings and EEO meetings and reported to the Director each Monday morning at the Staff Meeting. Handled all travel and moving when an employee was hired from another state. She was elected by the NIH population to serve on the NIH Credit Committee, which met weekly at lunchtime to review/approve/ disapprove loans to employees and also elected to the Board of Directors, who met monthly to establish and oversee the rules and regulations for the Credit Union, along with the Attorney. As a member of the Board, she attended annual meetings of the National Credit Union, which held educational workshops.
After 25 years, she decided to retire and she and her husband moved from Bethesda, MD to Columbia, MD. After one year in Columbia, the local paper had an ad which read "work when you want to" which was intriguing so she checked it out and was hired by The Rouse Company, a large development company with Corporate Headquarters in Columbia. They wanted their own "temporary" staff, who, would learn the Company and become more of an asset. She worked for the Chairman of the Board, President and CEO; Vice President, Corporate Public Affairs and assisted the Manager of the Spear Center, which was the large room for weddings, parties, etc. which would seat 500 guests for a sit down dinner. The company owned and operated approximately 76 shopping centers throughout the United States, many waterfront properties i.e. Baltimore Inner Harbor and San Antonio Riverwalk. If a trip was planned she would just notify Human Resources how long she would be away and on returning, would have a message on the answering machine of an assignment. When the decision to move to Texas was made, she resigned but it was an interesting experience. During the 22 years they lived in Columbia, they were very active in a Square Dance Club and developed many good friends. One of their favorite things was to entertain friends in their home which easily could accommodate 20 guests-some from church and some from square dancing. They also enjoyed traveling and traveled extensively as well as enjoyed cruises.
Mrs. Becker is survived by her son, Walter Ed and wife, Nancy; daughter, Rhonda Weible and husband, Steve; three grandsons, Jason and Justin Weible and Paul Becker; three great granddaughters; one great grandson; several nieces and nephews in Texas, New Jersey and Oklahoma; and a host of loyal, loving dear friends in Maryland.
Memorial services are 10:00 AM, Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at Jaynes Memorial Chapel. She will be laid to rest with her husband at the Dallas-Ft. Worth National Cemetery following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Duncanville, TX or The American Heart Association.
