Alvena (Mick) F. Benson, left this earthly life and entered her eternal life on Dec. 23, 2006, in her cherished home surrounded by members of her loving family. Mick was 92 years of age at the time of her death.

Mick was born in Townsend on Aug. 4, 1914, the second child of Charles and Mabel Williams joining her older sister, Margaret and followed by her younger sisters, Josephine, Jean, and Mary and brother, that died at birth.

Mick grew up in Townsend with her sisters and enjoyed spending time with her grandparents Michael and Margaret Sullivan on their farm, which is now under the waters of Canyon Ferry Lake, in the Canton valley.

She and her sisters were always getting into mischief around town much to the dismay of their father Charles who was the undersheriff of Broadwater County.

In September 1941, she married the love of her life Edwin H. Benson. She spent her adult life until Edwin's retirement in 1973, living in various locations in throughout Montana and in Denver as Edwin worked for the BLM and was transferred numerous times over his career.

She began her working life with the telephone company in Townsend, as a young woman and in retail businesses until her retirement. She loved the clothing business and the people she worked with and the public she served.

In 1973, they moved for the last time back to Montana to the home Edwin' s father designed and built in Helena.

She and Edwin were active members in the Cathedral of St. Helena parish for the over 33 years she lived in Helena, until her death. She rarely missed the 5:30 Saturday Mass.

Until her eyesight began to fail, she enjoyed making crocheted items which she loved to give to family and friends. There was one grand nephew who wasn't quite as happy with one of the items he received, as one day when Mick opened the local paper to read, there was a picture of the young lad selling Kool-aid at his little stand and right beside the Kool-aid was the clown doll Mick had made him for sale also. She got a good laugh over that sight.

She looked forward to her weekends spent with her sister, Margaret and nephew, Louie Gloege on shopping trips locally and to surrounding towns and dinner out with a few games of Keno thrown in for fun.

She loved Fourth of July celebrations held at her nephew's, Terry Gloege's home and the Christmas Eve celebrations held at her home every year. She particularly treasured the large family reunion gatherings held in the past.

Mick spent many a quiet evening with the company of her beloved dog, Peggy, watching her favorite TV shows "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy."

Mick is survived by two of her sisters, Margaret Gloege of Helena and Mary Miller of Libby; many cousins, nephews, nieces; and, of course, her beloved Peggy .

She is preceded in death by her husband Edwin, parents Charles and Mabel, sisters Jean Lewis and Josephine Lewis.

Mass in celebration of Mick's life will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday Dec. 29, 2006, at the Cathedral of St Helena. Interment of Cremated remains will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Cathedral of St. Helena, 535 N. Ewing St. Helena, MT 59601, Hospice of St. Peter's, 2475 Broadway, Helena, MT 59601, the Lewis and Clark Humane Society P.O.
