Ruby R. Benson Baechler, 103, of Elgin died Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at Maple Crest Manor, Fayette, Iowa, following a brief illness.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Elgin, with the Rev. Rick Johnson officiating.
Inurnment took place in Illyria Cemetery, rural Elgin.
Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Elgin handled the arrangements.
Ruby Ruth Benson Baechler's life journey began on May 11, 1906, at the home farm of her parents, Herve and Lana (Bigler) Robbins.
Ruby attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Elgin High School in Elgin with the class of 1925. Following high school, she attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette for a year and a half.
Ruby taught school for six years until her marriage to Thomas N. Benson on Sept. 30, 1930, at the Methodist Church parsonage in Elgin. Four children were born to this union.
Together they farmed the "Benson Family Farm" for 10 years until Thomas passed away in September 1940. Ruby then moved her four children into Elgin, where she kept busy making a living for her family. Ruby also sold Avon for many years in the area.
In May of 1946, profound sadness came again when her youngest child, Robert, drowned in Otter Creek. It was almost too much to bear, but Ruby helped her children to accept his passing, and in doing so, she was guided by the Lord's hand.
On Aug. 8, 1958, Ruby was united in marriage with Melbert Baechler at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Elgin. Ruby and Mel enjoyed traveling together and spent winters in Texas for 35 years. Mel passed away in January 2006.
Ruby loved spending time with her family and will be greatly missed by them.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herve and Lana Robbins; two husbands, Thomas N. Benson and Melbert Baechler; her son, Robert Benson; three sisters, Flossie Ogle, Susan Kelly and Norma Frieden; a brother, Robert J. Robbins; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Benson; and a son-in-law, Newell McIntyre.
Survivors include three children, Verla McIntyre of West Union, Thomas B. (Mary Lou) Benson of Tripoli, Beverly (Robert) Yancey of Cedar Rapids; 16 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and a host of other family members.
