Helen was born on August 4, 1928 in Cresco, the daughter of Oliver and Regina (Makepeace) Benson. She graduated from Cresco High School. After graduation she became a switchboard operator at the Marshalltown Hospital. She was united in marriage to John V. Benda on September 30, 1950 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Waterloo. Helen was a homemaker on the Benda family farm northeast of Toledo, moving into Toledo after John's death. Later due to ill health, she moved to Carrington Place of Toledo.
