Alexine J. (Glenn) Bennett, 92, loving mother and grandmother died Thursday, September 15, 2011 in Fort Collins, Colorado. She was born August 17, 1919 to David J. Glenn, Sr. and Dorthy (Dewar) Glenn. Alexine was united in marriage to Harold E. Bennett on May 19, 1936. Harold preceded her in death in 1981. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Wesley F. Glenn, and David J. Glenn, Jr. She is survived by her children; daughter Connie and husband Roger Sharp of Grand Junction, CO; daughter Doreen and husband Jess Grett of Olathe, CO; son Jerold and wife Doris Bennett of Wichita, KS; son Michael and wife D'Ann Bennett of Fort Collins, CO; sister-in law Ila (Stuck) Glenn of Portland, OR; and sister-in law Pat (Bennett) Nelson of Gillette, WY. She also leaves a legacy of 14 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Alexine was a devoted member of Saint John's Catholic Church of Yuma and a member of the Alter and Rosary Society. She had a way with numbers and worked as a bookkeeper for Sipple Oil Company, the Chevrolet dealership and Jay Flaming Jewelers. Alexine volunteered for many years with the Yuma Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed golfing, bowling, square dancing, card parties and Yuma High School Sports. Alexine attended events when her children were students at Yuma High School and for many years afterward. When she could no longer attend, Alexine listened to Yuma High sporting events on the radio. When her children cleaned her home they found hundreds of score sheets where she had kept score while listening to a Yuma game or match.
An important part of Alexine's life after Harold's death was morning coffee and breakfast with the ladies. Her friends provided companionship and support but the family often wondered if the story heard at the far end of the table was a creation of imagination or a function of hearing that was not quite as good as it used to be.
The world changed a great deal over Alexine's 92 years. In her early years she rode a horse to school. In her 90's she watched her great-grand daughter take her first steps on an IPad video emailed by her son. She enjoyed the video so much she watched it seven times.
The last months of Alexine's life were not the most fun time for her but her children enjoyed the many hours they got to spend with her. She shared her memories, smiled when they picked on her and always had a comeback. Alexine continued to guide her children by showing them the importance of saying please and thank you to her caregivers.
Shortly after Alexine's death, one of her granddaughters posted on facebook, " God got another angel this morning…my 92 year old gram passed away… she was ready, but we weren't… but she's in a better place and mom said she didn't know if her and gramps were playing cards or golf today…but gramps was waiting in the car honking for her to get there…"
