James was born in 1808 at Leland, Lancashire, England, son of Thomas and Ann Parker Bennett. On June 30, 1833 he married Ellen Pincock in Chorley, Lancashire, England, who was born in 1816 to John and Mary Marsden Pincock.
In 1841, James and Ellen with their 4 little children left their homeland. They sailed on the ship Sheffield. They spent 13 weeks on the water.
In 1852 they crossed the plains and settled in Kaysville, Utah. They had 14 children born to them, 11 of them grew to maturity. One child, Ann, the oldest died in infancy in England.
