Dorothy Jacobson Bennett, age 86, of Edina, died October 24, 2008.
Born May 23, 1922 in Preston, Dorothy was a schoolteacher in southern Minnesota in the late 1930s, teaching in a one-room schoolhouse. Throughout her life, she loved working on community and charitable efforts that benefited youth education and the arts.
Dorothy met Wayne Bennett of Albert Lea over a "Green River" ice cream drink at the soda fountain where she worked. They married in December 1941. After Wayne returned from WWII, he became a police officer. Not long after, they had an opportunity to move north, where Wayne eventually served as Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police in Edina.
Dorothy and Wayne were active in the community and members of Normandale Lutheran Church in Edina and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Eden Prairie. She was a librarian for Eden Prairie High School, then headed Rosemount Inc.'s technical library.
They raised their five children in Edina and Eden Prairie.
In the mid-1970s, Dorothy and Wayne moved to Boulder City, Nevada. Over the years, she worked for the University of Nevada/Las Vegas library, owned an office supply business, handled public relations for various clients, and served as a VISTA program coordinator. Once again, Dorothy volunteered many hours with community and charitable programs, with a focus on youth education.
Dorothy is survived by five children, Connie (Jay) Magoffin of Edina; Patricia (Bob) Carlson of Edina; Mike (Kim) Bennett of Mosca, Colorado; Mitzi-Kay Francis of Hampstead, Maryland; Anne Bennett of Hampstead, Maryland; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
