Betty-Jane (Fox) Bennett, 91, of Centerville and Floral City, Fla., died Sept. 25, 2013, at Beth Israel Hospital after a short illness. She was the widow of William R. Bennett. They were married for 45 years until Bill passed away in 1991.
Born on April 30, 1922, in King Ferry, N.Y., Betty-Jane graduated from Cortland State Teachers College, now SUNY Cortland. She married Bill Bennett in 1946 after he returned from WWII. They honeymooned on Cape Cod and happily returned to the Cape years later to spend time with their daughters and grandchildren. When they first married they lived in Cortland, then moved to Largo, Fla., in 1958. BJ was a teacher in the Pinellas County School System for over 26 years.
Betty-Jane and Bill retired to Floral City, where BJ was a volunteer at Citrus Memorial Hospital for over 25 years. They had many cherished friends in every place they lived. They loved dancing and entertaining and they enjoyed many wonderful trips, both across the U.S. in their RV and on cruises and tours through Europe and Asia.
Betty-Jane is survived by her daughters, Marcia (Tom) VanderVoort and Nancy (Craig) Sipiora of Centerville; four grandchildren, Douglas Sipiora, Betsy VanderVoort, Amy (Chad) Susong, and Captain John (Debbie) VanderVoort; as well as four great-grandchildren, Devon Sipiora, Brooke and Cooper Susong, and Kinley VanderVoort.
For the past five years BJ lived with Nancy and Craig and enjoyed all that Cape Cod had to offer. She loved being part of family activities and became an avid Red Sox fan, especially her boy, Jacoby Ellsbury! She was a strong and vibrant woman and will be missed by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her name may be made to the Patient Care Fund of Mashpee for the benefit of dialysis patients on Cape Cod (P.O. Box 1222, Mashpee, MA 02649) or to the charity of one's choice . Burial will be at a later date at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, with her husband.
