Deceased Name: Ed Bennett, former lawmaker, dies

SPRINGFIELD -- Ed Bennett, who died Wednesday night, will be remembered for his 22 years in the South Carolina House of Representatives and his seven terms as Springfield mayor.
Bennett, 93, passed away in his sleep, said his daughter, Peg Bennett Stover. Arrangements are pending by Folk Funeral Home in Williston.
"He was a fine fellow," said retired Rep. Thomas N. Rhoad of Bamberg, a fellow Democrat. "He was a gentleman and a real good legislator. Everybody respected him."
Laurie Edward Bennett was born in Springfield on April 11, 1919. He was a member of Springfield United Methodist Church, graduated from Springfield High School and attended Clemson University. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1941 to 1945 during World War II and earned two Bronze Stars. He served on Clemson University's Board of Visitors.
Bennett represented District 96 in the S.C. House from 1969 until 1980, and for the last six years, he was chairman of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee.
In 1980, North farmer and school district trustee Danny E. Bundrick waged what was described as a well-funded campaign to unseat Bennett. The Times and Democrat headline after the Democratic Party primary in June 1980 read, "Bundrick Defeats Bennett."
In the next election cycle, Bennett waged a vigorous campaign to regain the seat. The T&D headline after the Democratic Party primary in June 1982 read, "Bennett Defeats Bundrick."
When Bennett rejoined the Legislature, he was named the first chairman emeritus of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee.
Upon his retirement, the General Assembly in 1992 adopted a concurrent resolution, sponsored by Rhoad, commending Bennett "for his many years of loyal and dedicated (public) service ... as an able and respected member of the General Assembly and (during) seven terms as the mayor of Springfield prior to being elected to the House."
The resolution noted his 13 years of service on the South Carolina Wildlife Commission and his selection as the Legislative Conservationist of 1979 by the South Carolina Wildlife Federation.
"Ed Bennett has always placed the welfare of the people he represents and the State above all other interests, and he (has) earned the respect and admiration of the members of the (Legislature)," the resolution continued. "This quiet, unassuming gentleman's leadership and kindness will be greatly missed in the State House by his many friends, colleagues, and legislative staff."
