At the time of his death, Harold Gene “Red" Bennett, 25, was living in Indianpolis, Indiana. He was killed instantly in a two-car crash near Marengo at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 28, 1957. Harold, who was spending the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Bennett of Ottumwa, was en route to Iowa City to attend the Iowa-Utah State football game. Also killed in the crash was Pattie Everlyn Pumphrey, 27, of Gainsville, Florida. Miss Pumphrey had joined Harold at a Des Moines bus station. She was a graduate student at Iowa State College.

At the time of Harold’s death, he was working as a salesman for the P.R. Mallory & Co., an electrical equipment manufacturing firm at Frankfort, Indiana, near Indianpolis.

He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1951 and had served with the U.S. Air Force. He served both in Guam and two years in England. He had been released to inactive duty in May 1955.

Surviving were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Bennett; one brother, Jack at home; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Henthorne of Nampa, Ida., and two nieces. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Martha, on March 12, 1934.
