August "Gus" William Benner, Sr. was born in Luling, Caldwell County, Texas on April 2, 1916 to Herbert Benner and Maggie Matthews (Certificate 19318). Gus attended school in Luling, graduating from High School in 1934. In High School he excelled in track, earning an athletic scholarship to Southwest Texas State Teachers College (1936-37 [The Pedagogue 1937]). August "Gus" W. Benner married Catherine Emma Fawcett on July 27, 1937. He continued his studies at Southwest Texas Teachers College, and graduated in the summer of 1940. Upon graduation he took a teaching position at D'Hanis, Texas. He taught third and fourth grades and high school bookeeping, plus acted as Scoutmaster for a local troup. He did such a good job with the troop that he went into Scouting as a profession. After going to training school at Mendham, New Jersey, he took a job at Selma, Alabama. He was there 18 months when he was transferred to Dothan, Alabama. While there he was drafted into the Army.

Gus Benner (Co. B, 142 Inf., 36th Div.) was captured in the Battle of the Bulge, and held prisoner in a German POW camp from Jan. 9, 1945 until April 1, 1945. Catherine's last message from Gus was in Dec. 1944. In April she learned that he was listed MIA. His liberation was first announced in the Fort Worth Star. Throughout the war she lived with her parents in San Antonio.

After his liberation, Gus was taken to a hospital in London, and then transferred to Brooke Hospital in San Antonio. When he came back from service, the Benners moved to Fort Scott, Kansas (1945-46), Dallas, Texas (1947-54), Paris, Texas (1954-57), Lubbock, Texas (1957-65), Chicago, Illinois (1965-67), Japan (1967-68), Chicago (1968-69), and Dallas (1969-74). Gus retired in 1974. They moved to just northwest of Boerne, Texas in 1977.

Their children are: Virginia Pearl Benner Shamburger (December 9, 1937 - April 2, 1968), Rev. August William Benner (December 24, 1939 - ), Betty Benner (Hall) (December 10, 1943 - ), and Janice Benner (May 12, 1946 - ). All but one of them attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

Hall and her husband Ronald of Gatesville, Texas, Janice Kliewer and her husband Terry of Katy, Texas; 11 Grandchildren, 9 Great Grandchildren, Brother; Percy M. Benner and his wife Clell of Willspoint, Texas, also many nieces, nephews and many close friends.

A Memorial Service celebrating Gus's life will be Monday, December 27 10:00 A.M. at St. Mark's Presbyterian Church, 208 W. Bandera Rd. in Boerne, Texas. In lieu of flowers all memorial contributions can be made to Habitat for Humanity in San Antonio, 311 Probandt St., San Antonio, Texas 78204 in Gus's Memory. August enlisted in US Army May 23, 1944 at Fort Sam Houston.
