Peggy was born in Mitchell County on October 6, 1927 to the late W.H. Thomas and Georgia Bell Thomas. She was a life long member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Nebo and was considered by her family to be the All American Granny. She loved to cook, paint, and write poetry.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Clayton Benfield, two sons, David Benfield and Kenneth Benfield and a grandson, David James Williams.
Survivors include her two sons of Nebo; three daughters of Morganton, and Daughter-in-law of Morganton. Also surviving are her two brothers of Newland and of Penn Laird, VA.; twenty grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, and two great- great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Oak Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Gyles Widener officiating.
