In 1860, he was a laborer living with his family in Pequea Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. By 1864, he stood 5' 6" tall and had brown hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of eighteen and mustered into federal service at Lancaster March 6, 1865, as a private with Co. H, 195th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company January 31, 1866. He is in the company register as "Benedick." It is possible he is the same-aged Amos Benedict who enlisted in Lancaster July 15, 1864, mustered into state service there July 19 as a private with Hebble's Independent Cavalry Militia, and honorably discharged with the unit October 29, 1864. However, there is as yet no hard evidence of that, and the subject of this post did not include that service in his pension application (a not uncommon occurrence with regard to service in state militia units).

On December 10, 1866, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty in Lancaster with the regular army, assigned to Co. F, 15th U.S. Infantry, and honorably discharged August 24, 1867, a private. The reason for the early discharge is not stated in the army enlistment register, but health is the most likely reason. His service records spell his surname "Benedick," but he applied for his pension as "Benedict."

He later moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, where he married Lydia Ann Reagan or Ragan February 10, 1876, fathering Gertrude (b. 05/03/79 - married Albert Franklin McCoy), Casander (b. 02/??/80), Jesse Blaine (b. 07/20/84), and Christena May (b. 05/18/89). He died from an apparent heart attack while mowing the grass in Pickrell Cemetery. His body was not found until later that day.
