Alern “Butch” Bendix, Jr., 71, of New Ulm died Saturday, October 10, 2015 at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Pastor Debra Bergstrand officiating. Burial will be in the New Ulm City Cemetery, Soldier’s Rest Section, with full military honors being conducted by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard. Visitation will be 4 – 7 p.m. Wednesday and from 7:30 – 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, SOUTH CHAPEL, in New Ulm and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Thursday.

Butch is survived by his wife, Norma “Jean” Bendix of New Ulm; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Paul Clayton of Janesville; son and daughter-in-law, John and Heidi Bendix of Courtland; grandchildren, Eric (Staci), Dylan, Logan, Taryn, Jacob; great grandson, Blake; sister and brother-in-law, Evie and Curt Sorensen of Paynesville; brother and sister-in-law, Berton and Sherry Bendix of Courtland; nieces; and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Gladys and Gail Mayer.

Alern Herman Bendix, Jr. was born on October 29, 1943 in New Ulm to Alern, Sr. and Edna (Bode) Bendix. He attended Immanuel Lutheran School for nine years and then attended South Central College in Mankato for two years. On May 13, 1967 he was united in marriage to Norma Jean Giersdorf at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Courtland. From February of 1967 to February 1973 he served in the U.S. Navy. Butch worked at 3M in New Ulm and then worked in Maintenance for the City of New Ulm for fifteen years retiring in 2006. Butch enjoyed old time music, dancing, cooking, working on the family farm, restoring his truck, camping, and fixing things. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in New Ulm, American Legion Post #132, VFW Post #1648, and the DAV Chapter 15 all in New Ulm. www.mvfh.org
