Albert was the third of 14 children born to Ernestine Wilhelmine (Schultz) and Karl Friedrich Belling. He was born in Pommerania, Germany and came over to the U.S. with his parents in April 1883. The family settled in Appleton. On January 31, 1899 he married Martha Marie Theresa Bierman, the only child of Bertha (Knitt) and Christian Bierman. Together they had seven children: Wilmer, Elmer Carl, Wilbert Carl, twins Mabel Emilie and Hazel Emma, Loretta Bertha and Richard E. Martha died of diabetes in 1913. Seven years later, Albert married a widow, Emily (Adams) Sparrow from Montreal, Canada. Emily and Albert had three children: Burton Emil, and twins: Walter Oran and Wallace Carl.

Albert fathered two sets of twins; one set with each wife.
