JUDGE MARTIN BELL
Hollidaysburg Pa. January 3- Martin Bell judge of the Blair county court, was found dead in bed at his home in Hollidaysburg at 10:15 o'clock yesterday morning. Death is attributed to heard disease. He had been about as usual all week, and his death was entirely unexpected. On Wednesday his wife went to Indianapolis on a visit and was away when the judge died. Judge Bell was born September 30, 1849, in Antic township, Blair county, Pa., where his ancestors settled prior to the revolutionary war. The town of Bellwood is called for the family. Martin Bell was graduated from Bucknell university in 1869, and was admitted to the bar in 1873. He was elected district attorney of Blair county in 1886 and served two terms in that office. In 1893 he was elected judge on the Republican ticket and was re-elected at the end of his term. The judge was an active and successful manager of local Republican politics and prominent in the Masonic fraternity. Judge Bell had been in feeble health for the past year, and was frequently unable to conduct court, about half of the year's work being done by Judge Schull of Perry county. Judge Bell's most notable judicial decision was his joint deliverance with Judge Robert Von Moschzisker of Philadelphia, in which they upheld the constitutionality of the judges' salary increase law. He was the first judge in the state to declare the Tustin pure food law unconstitutional. Judge Bell took an active interest in athletic sports and was an ardent follower of baseball. Formerly he was a captain in the Pennsylvania National Guard. Surviving are his widow, who was a niece of former Auditor General, John A. Lemon, and six children. He was a son of the Rev. A.K. Bell, once a leading clergyman of the Baptist church in Central Pennsylvania.
