TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- A small apartment living room held a scene of horror Friday: the bullet-torn bodies of two women, three young children and the man whom police suspect pulled the trigger.
Investigators believe 23-year-old Edwin Bell shot his estranged girlfriend, their children and his own mother before turning the gun on himself, Officer Andy Phillips said.
"The information we had is that he came over to pick the children up and it happened then," Phillips said. "There are bodies all over the room. I don't think they had a chance."
The shootings took place in a small, one-story apartment in north Tulsa.
Police identified the victims as Bell's mother, Linda Farris, 45; Markita King, 21; and Ebony, 4, Essyce, 2, and 8-month-old Marjonna Bell.
Phillips said Ms. King had moved to Tulsa, apparently "to get away" from Bell. He and his mother had traveled together from Oklahoma City, where he was living, to visit the children, Phillips said.
All the victims appeared to have been shot with a 9mm handgun. Phillips said bodies were found on the couch and the floor of the
It did not appear that there had been a struggle or that anyone had attempted to flee the room, he said. Authorities feel certain it was a murder-suicide because of the way the gun was located near the father's body.
"We haven't discovered any notes or have any motive at all," he said.
Witnesses heard gunshots, but Phillips declined to say when. The shootings occurred between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., and the bodies were discovered by a relative of Ms. King who became concerned when the woman did not answer her telephone Friday morning, he said.
Several relatives arrived on the scene sobbing and wailing. Curious neighbors looked on as investigators move in and out of the apartment.
John Johnson, who lives in an apartment across the street, said he often hears gunshots in the neighborhood and assumes it's "just people cleaning the cobwebs out of their guns." He said he heard nothing early Friday.
Neighbors said they had seen the older children playing outside but knew nothing about their young mother.
Robert Hunter, a 43-year-old father of five, shook his head sadly at the crime scene.
"There ain't nothing in the world bad enough to make you want to do something that bad to your kids. To anybody," he said.
