Birth: Oct. 18, 1932
Death: Jan. 24, 2012

Barbara, 79, passed away January 24, 2012, at The Residence of Arbor Hospice in Ann Arbor after a long battle with cancer. She was the second child of Mark and Celia (Gearhart) Nash.

She graduated from Howell High School in 1951 and married Louis Clayton "Bud" Bekkering the very next day.

Loving mother of the late Laura (John) Basile (7/14/96), the late Steven (Cindy) Bekkering (5/13/87), Kathleen (Ben) Henry of Webberville, Matthew Bekkering of Arizona, Suzy (Tom) Cook of Howell, and Alice Freshour (Todd) Brown of Brighton, she is also survived by five grandchildren, Steven, Peter, Lauren, Brooke and Isaac, and five siblings, Mary Jane (Jack) Clark of Dexter, David (Lou Ann) Nash of Madison Heights, Nancy (Glen) Meeden of Minneapolis, MN, Rachel (Ted) Heldt of Mosinee, WI, and Martha (Ron) Towas of South Lyon.

During a successful stint as a local reporter, she served as News Director of WHMI radio station, editor of The Brighton Argus, and Livingston County Bureau Chief for The Lansing State Journal. When she felt her career as a reporter was making her too "hard" she left reporting behind so she could be more accessible to help manage the brittle diabetes of two of their four children at home.

She and Bud became emergency foster care parents. Over the next 8 years, they took in approximately 280 foster children, receiving them immediately after being removed from their homes and keeping them until a suitable placement could be found.

Barbara worked with the local Salvation Army for 8 years, managing their Thrift Store and serving on their board of directors. An accomplished writer, Bible teacher, and artist, she has sought to show the love of Jesus to anyone she could.

Barbara was a member of the First Baptist Church of Howell, where her funeral will be held on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to encourage memorial donations to The Residence of Arbor Hospice, Ann Arbor, MI, where she was so lovingly cared for in the nine months preceding her death.
