Menachem Begin

He was the 6th Prime Minister of Israel. A native of Poland, he fled to the Soviet Union when the Nazis invaded. He was arrested in September of 1940 and charged with espionage. Sentenced to eight years at a concentration camp in Siberia, he was freed in 1941 as part of an accord with the Polish government. His father, mother, and brother died in the Nazi Holocaust. He will be best remembered for signing Israel's first peace treaty with an Arab neighbor, Egypt in 1979. He shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. (bio by: Ron Moody)
