Atcitty Begay passed away peacefully at the age of 101, on Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at his granddaughter's home in Leupp, Ariz. He had lived with his grandchildren at Flagstaff, Ariz., and Leupp for the past nine years.
Mr. Begay was of the Salt and Descheenie Clan, born at Rock Point, Ariz., July 15, 1897. He was one of nine children. His father was a silversmith and his mother wove rugs and raised sheep.
He lived most of his life in Shiprock. He was married to Nellie Begay approximately 85 years. They were members of the Shiprock Christian Reformed Church and had five children.
Atcitty worked for the Navajo tribe and retired from the B. I. A. Branch of Roads after 30 years.
Mr. Begay was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Begay and a daughter, Loretta Bouldin, both of Shiprock, and by his great-grandson, Jerrod Tso of Leupp. Loretta and her late husband, W. A. Bouldin were former owners and managers of the Hotel Shiprock.
Atcitty is survived by his granddaughters, Juanita Tso of Arizona and Carmelita Beuvais of Albuquerque. There are nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 3. Interment was at Greenlawn Cemetery.
