funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 17 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Bishop for 21-year Bishop resident Joseph Roy Beery. Father Gracey will officiate. Viewing will take place at 8 a.m. at OLPH, followed by the Rosary at 9 a.m. Graveside services will follow mass at the East Line Street Cemetery. Refreshments will be served at the OLPH Church Hall after the graveside service.
Born in Long Beach on Jan. 4, 1945 to Frank and Geneive Beery, Joe died April 9, 2009 in Big Pine. He was 64.
Joe was born into a family of 10 children. He started working at the age of 8 as a paperboy to bring money home to his mama. He lived in the San Pedro area until junior high and then moved to Colton. At the age of 17, he joined the Army and went to Germany. After spending two years there he came home and started college on the GI Bill at San Bernardino College and started working for Delta Flo. He graduated with an Associate's Degree. He then went to work for Southern California Edison from 1981 to 1998. He loved life.
Joe then bought the local car wash, Our Water Works, which he ran with his wife, Shirley, and son, Jeromy. He also continued to work out of town, contracting around the U.S. until passing away on his way home in Big Pine.
"Joe will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends, and will be in our thoughts and memories, my friend," said his loved ones. "We miss you and love you, Pop."
Joe is survived by his wife of 36 years, Shirley; son, Jeromy Beery and wife Jennifer; son, R.T. Johnston and wife Rebecca; son, David Johnston and wife, Deseree; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Natalie Beltcher of Reno, Michelle Jennings of Washington and Yvonne Lockwood of Riverside; brother, Tony Beery of Oregon; and numerous nieces and nephews.
